The usual charge for Cloverly's services is 25 cents per transaction. That covers our costs for calculating the approximate carbon emissions of an ecommerce shipment or other activity, for providing an offset, and for generally running our company.
Actually, it doesn't cover all of our costs. Not yet. Cloverly is a startup, launched on Earth Day (April 22) 2019. Like most startups in their early years, we are progressing toward break-even financial status, but we're not there yet.
The question of why we have a flat 25-cent fee is really 2 questions:
- Why do we charge a flat fee per transaction instead of charging a subscription fee or using some other pricing structure? Answer: The per-transaction model is typical for an API company (think Stripe, for example), and it seems fairest to our customers. You pay for Cloverly's services only when you use them.
- Why is the fee 25 cents? Answer: According to our financial projections, that's what we'll need to operate the company.
